History of Ham Lake
The small Township of Ham Lake was first settled back in 1857 and was connected to Grow Township up until 1871 when they were officially separated. The original name was actually Glengarry, a name with Scottish origins. However, Swedish settlers just found it too difficult to pronounce. Therefore, the county commissioners renamed it to Ham Lake. It achieved incorporation on November 13, 1973. It officially became a city on Jan. 8, 1974 with Eldon Hentges becoming its first mayor.
